July 28th 2005 "Rumble on the River 2005"
While this event wasn’t part of the series, The Church Street Boxing Gym and Blair Productions teamed up with the Hudson River Park to bring the events outdoors for the summer. July 28th was the first of two scheduled for the summer and it opened with a bang.
Approximately 2,300 people showed up to pier 54 to watch boxing at one of the most unique venues ever used for such an event. And best of all it was completely free to the public! “After years of support from the people of New York, we wanted to give something back to our clients and to downtown New York” said Justin Blair, President of Blair Productions, Inc and of the Church Street Boxing Gym.
The picturesque view of the sailboats on the Hudson River as the sun set was rivaled only by energy of the enthusiastic crowd and the 11 bouts that took place that evening.
August 25th 2005 "Rumble on the River 2005"
The second evening of the brand new series was even larger than the first one. As with the first event, a picturesque setting with the Sun setting on the Hudson on one side of the ring and the Manhattan skyline on the other made for a truly dramatic back drop of the evening. Coming off of the heels of a tremendous opener in July, The August installment of the Rumble on The River seemed to pick up where the previous evening left off. Nearly 3,000 people attended that evening and enjoyed the 8 bouts that took place. The highlight of the evening was the main event. Church Street Boxing Gyms own Olade Thomas stepped up in weight against the more experienced Mike Reno for a 4 round welterweight bout that was a perfect ending to a great series. Reno came on strong in the first 2 rounds however Thomas "dug deep"? in the second round of the bout and managed to outwork his opponent. |
