On May 13th, the Friday Night Fights NYC Series went into uncharted territory by combining Amatuer Boxing and Muay Thai Boxing on the same evening! This was the first time that this was ever done in New York and it went over so well that beginning in September 2005, you’ll be seeing a lot more combined cards on the series.
This evening was our biggest crowd yet at the new arena. While Church Street’s own Olade Thomas lost a hard fought battle against Elmcore’s Darren Curry the fight was very entertaining and a great crowd pleaser. David Johnson of Brooklyn put on a fantastic display of his technical skills against the always game Gus Smyiakos. A close fought battle between the FDNY’s Mike Reno and Kurt Fredericks was cut short due to an shoulder injury to Fredericks in the 4th and final round of their open class bout. Flyweights Gustavo “Chucky” Naranjo (Church St) & Shaun Manning (Joe Frazier’s Gym, Philadelphia) fought an incredible bout featuring both skills and guts with a flurry of punches from the start to the end of the match. While Chucky didn’t get the decision, his performance was unrivaled that evening.
The Muay Thai bouts were equally as entertaining as Chris Kwiatkowski defeated Denver’s Mike Baldwin for the North East Regional WKA Welter-weight Title. Chris Romulo was defeated by Donald Cerrone in a flurry of punches that destined the match to end well before the scheduled number of rounds. While Romulo fought bravely, the younger Cerrone was the victor. |
