Welocme to Friday Night Fights

December 1st, 2006 FNF Event Summary for website

Historically, there have always been two “big” shows. The final event of the year and the first event of the year. So, based on the unusually large crowds from the September and October shows, we knew that we would have a big turnout for this one.

We had no idea it would be anything like what happened! Every ticket was sold and the online ticket sales had to be shut down early because demand was so high. With the exception of a few lucky people, those that waited to get their tickets at the door were disappointed when they were tuned away from the sold out show. Needless to say, the energy in the packed house was electric. There wasn’t a space in the room that wasn’t filled!

The show consisted of 6 amateur boxing matches, 5 Muay Thai matches and the return of the Dangere’ dancers in the Scion half-time show. In addition to the great fights, the crowd was also entertained with two large screen projections of the Fight Night Round 3 video game, a raffle with a giveaway of courtside seats to the Knick’s and an inflatable hoops game.

The evening’s highlights included the best fight of the night featuring Chris Kwiatkowski and Aaron Veverka. The battle between these two fighters was exhilarating as every exchange was exciting but inconclusive as each man gave as well as he received. Going into the 3rd and final round each man knew that this would be the deciding round and so, leaving nothing to chance, both men stood toe to toe refusing to give up their ground. Throwing caution to the wind, Kwiatkowski continued his barrage and in the final seconds of the match wore down Veverka enough to convince the judges that the fight belonged to him and he convinced the rest of the crowd that the best fight of the night belonged to him also.

While all of the fights were exciting, it seemed as though the best was saved for last. In the match right after Kwiatkowski / Veverka, Church Street’s own Paul Diaz and Roberto Zumba entered the ring for the final match of the evening. In what was each fighter’s first bout, neither one showed any hesitation. Each man appeared to have one gear……forward. From the start to the finish of all 3 rounds the fighters never backed up and threw punches and combinations at a blistering pace. In the end, the match went to Diaz however Zumba’s efforts made sure that this first win didn’t come easy.

We aren’t quite sure what it is that makes the end of year shows so exciting…..is it the spiked eggnog, the restless anticipation of the upcoming holidays, the fear of one more office x-mas party or if everyone just wants to squeeze one more great night out of the year as it winds down. Regardless of why, the December 1st show lived up to everyone’s expectations and was a great end to a great year of the Friday Night Fights NYC Series.

To all of our fans that have supported our shows this past year, we would like to wish you all a great holiday season and we look forward to seeing you all in 2007.
